Originally a military survey vessel designed and built by the Army Corp of Engineers in 1936 in Lake Washington Shipyard, she has an LOA of 125 feet and a beam of 26 feet.
She’s powered by a Caterpillar D398, and sips fuel at about 12 - 15 gph depending on operation configuration (Inverter/Generator). She’s got a range in excess of 5,000 nautical miles. A helicopter pad enables flight capabilities. You’ll be self-sustaining while in remote areas with helicopter support services to access land.
Sacajawea is a rare and intact representative of her class of vessel, with local and national levels of recognition. Listing is all but approved in the National Register of Historic Places. Her contributions include the navigation and charting of the Columbia River, engagement during WWII in the Aleutian Islands and support work to scientific discoveries. An application has been submitted to the California State Historian’s Office and the submission will be considered in January 2022 for historic landmark nominations at state and federal levels. Historic status provides benefits for both preservation consideration when using the vessel commercially and for obtaining grants.
Sacajawea is being considered for a grant by the Carl Moyer Grant Team of the California Air Quality Management department. This grant is for engine re-powering and can yield up to 80% of the replacement cost once historic status is achieved. The additional 20% of the repower cost can be supplied by DERA (Diesel Engine Replacement Authority), a federal program that matches grants like the Carl Moyer.
Savvy investors also know this transaction may have potential tax benefits of IRS Section 179 where immediate expense deduction is allowed when purchasing depreciable business equipment. This is in lieu of capitalizing and depreciating the asset over an extended period.
Since the Sacajawea was originally a hybrid diesel electric vessel there are many potential benefits and promotional opportunities associated with restoring the propulsion system to a 21st Century hybrid system. Initial steps towards this effort have been made by adding a 30kW inverter system that functionally eliminates the need to operate a diesel generator thereby significantly improving efficiency, performance and air quality. Sacajawea was designed and built to withstand extreme conditions in Alaskan waters and the Bering Sea. Her hull is constructed of high iron riveted steel – one of the first types of steel ever made. High iron steel resists corrosion much more effectively than newer and less pure steel. The Army Corp of Engineers designed the hull curvature so that it integrates with the propeller curvature, resulting in maximum efficiency underway.
She accommodates twelve guests in six cabins - three twin bed cabins and three full-size bed cabins - two with ensuite heads. There are a total of six heads. In addition, seven to eight crew are accommodated in three cabins. She’s got a commercial galley and a cozy dining area. The main salon is accessible from starboard or port and is windowed on three sides, creating the single largest enclosed gathering area aboard with four couches seating sixteen people and standing area with ample access to the wet bar and mini refrigerator. She’s got a crane system to manage the 21 foot tender that sits on the main deck. Her decks are painted fir - elastomeric rubber over wood.
Her electrical system consists of 240v three phase AC, 120v/50 Amp Shore power (100 Amp ready), 24v DC three phase 240v AC Inverter System (30KW full ship), 120v Bridge with 12v DC nav and communications back-up.
